Refund Urchin Control Program
A destructive marine pest is spreading along Tasmania’s coastline — and now it has reached the west coast.
Long-spined sea urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii) have already devastated around 50% of reefs on Tasmania’s north east coast, transforming once-productive kelp forests into barren seascapes. These changes threaten marine life, fisheries, and the coastal communities that depend on a healthy ocean.
A proven response is already underway. Each year, hundreds of tonnes of urchins are removed through targeted control programs, supporting both ecosystem recovery and local jobs. But without continued government funding, this critical work is at risk.
The recent detection of a Long-spined sea urchin on the west coast is an early warning. Acting now gives us the best chance to contain the spread and protect areas that are still healthy.
Tasmania’s oceans are central to our identity, livelihoods, and way of life. We have a responsibility to take care of them — and that means backing practical solutions that work.
