Tasmania is home to some of the world’s most iconic and beautiful freshwater rivers, lakes and wetlands.
For decades, Tasmanians have fought to protect these treasured places, with grand successes such as the iconic Franklin River campaign.

But today, increasing drought, expanding irrigation, riparian damage, erosion and sedimentation, urban development, fertilizer runoff and sewage outflows are degrading these critical resources.
The State of the Environment Report 2024 revealed major gaps in monitoring of Tasmania’s waterways — and that up to 50% of monitored sites were in an impaired condition.
Water is essential for all life. If we don’t act now, we put our freshwater future at risk.
