What's Special

Rivers give life to our wilderness, our wildlife and our cities. They irrigate our farmland, providing food for both domestic consumption and export.

Rivers provide most of Tasmania’s electricity through a sophisticated hydro-electric scheme, and provide the very best of fishing and recreation available.

Tasmania’s rivers underpin the State’s tourism industry and fine food exports. Tasmania interwoven network of rivers and lakes feed into four main river systems. As a small island state, all our rivers flow eventually into Tasmania’s surrounding oceanic waters. Compared to the rest of Australia, Tasmania has an unusually high proportion of undisturbed rivers, however pressures are mounting.
