If you want to feel great about reaching for salmon in the deli - take a minute to sign our petition to the supermarkets. The big supermarkets, like Coles and Woolworths, are the biggest buyers of farmed salmon brands, so have the most power to make change. We're asking them for basic improvements, like labelling farmed salmon brands to give shoppers choice and not using antibiotics the World Health Organisation says they shouldn't be using.

To Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi Sustainability Managers,

I am writing about the farmed salmon you stock in your supermarket and the lack of transparency in the salmon farming industry.

Tassal, Huon and Petuna are the three big companies farming salmon in Tasmania’s oceans and selling their salmon products through your stores.

Environment Tasmania has rated all three of the salmon companies RED for their overall negative performance on important criteria for marine protection, animal welfare and our health.

I want to buy salmon from your stores that I can trust. So I am asking that you work with salmon companies wanting to supply salmon to your stores.

You can immediately improve transparency and sustainability by:

  • Labelling all brands of farmed salmon you sell (including in the deli), informing customers that the product is farmed, not wild-caught.

And clearly disclosing to the public:

  • The total amount of kilograms of antibiotics used across the lifespan of farmed salmon.
  • The types of antibiotics used.
  • The total amount of kilograms of feces dumped into Tasmania’s oceans every year.
  • The percentage of seafloor marine life killed under salmon pens every year, for every farm.
  • If salmon has been fed rare, vulnerable, near-threatened and endangered species in their feed.
  • How many farmed salmon die every year on every farm before they are harvested and the main cause of death.
  • The number of salmon that escape from salmon farms into Tasmania's oceans.
  • The percentage of deformities and death in hatchery stock.

I would like you to work with salmon companies, requiring them to make a measurable reduction in the amount of feces they dump in the ocean, their antibiotic use, the percentage of marine life killed on the seafloor under their salmon pens, the amount of salmon that die during farming.
