Walk Against Warming, Cornelian Bay, Hobart + Lottah Picnic Grounds, Blue Tier:
Environment Tasmania and Sustainable Living Tasmania organised this year's event at Cornelian Bay, Hobart.
Friends of the Blue Tier also organised a walk - in threatened old growth forest in the spectacular Blue Tier.

Both events went really. At Cornelian Bay we had about 200 people which was great given our limited time and resources this year. We had about 50-80 people walk/ride the 4km to the event from a meeting point just outside hobart (the Cenotaph). Speaking in Hobart were: Peter Boyer (Peter Boyer (The Climate Project), Christine Milne (Australian Greens Senator), Margaret Steadman (Sustainable Living Tasmania), Corey Peterson (Sustainability Officer, Mackillop College) and Sam Simenetis (Rail, Tram and Bus Union). After our speakers we walked from the foreshore up to the headlands (20 mins return) and then put on a vegan BBQ and had the local kite club come along selling $3 kites which looked great, plus a few local groups had colourful stalls and kids activities.

We got great media coverage -the Mercury newspaper met the group at the Cenotaph and we got a good article in the Sunday paper - then we got radio and great pieces on all 3 TV news shows that night.

Weilangta News:
Swift Parrot "Reprieve" Not Enough to Halt Extinction Threat

Local residents welcome yesterday's announcement by David Llewellyn, Minister for Energy and Resources, Primary Industries and Water, that logging and woodchipping will be postponed in Wielangta Forest where endangered Swift Parrots are currently breeding.

"The Minister's announcement will allow the Swift Parrots to breed in safety in Wielangta for this year, but still leaves the way open for Forestry Tasmania to log this all important breeding habitat as soon as they migrate back to the mainland" said Sharon East, spokesperson, Wild Wielangta, South East Tas Forest Protection Group...to read media release click here

Polluting Pulp Mill Win in Russia:

After decades of campaigning, environmentalists in Russia are celebrating the closure of a notorious factory controlled by the billionaire Oleg Deripaska that pumped toxic waste into Lake Baikal.

Since it was built more than four decades ago the Baikalsk paper and pulp mill has allegedly run off thousands of tonnes of dioxin and other harmful byproducts into the world's deepest lake.

EPBC review: Time for a greenhouse trigger?

Minister Peter Garrett has announced that the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act will be reviewed by Dr Alan Hawke, and will be due in October 2009. Of particular interest to CANA members is that this Act can be amended to incorporate a 'greenhouse trigger' for high polluting developments. The Federal Government drafted such a trigger in 1998, and suggested amendments to the Act to incorporate this trigger are made in the people's Climate Protection Bill (www.climatemovement,org.au/ClimateProtectionBill). The discussion paper and terms of reference can be viewed at www.environment.gov.au/epbc/review.

Submissions are due by 19 December 2008.
