Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett has granted a partial approval of Gunns' pulp mill, despite raising serious concerns over the proposal. Garrett approved 9 more modules of Gunns' Environmental Impact Management Plan and granted the company a 26 month extension for modules L, M and N. The outstanding modules relate to the actual commissioning, operation and monitoring of the mill, including the necessity for further environmental impact studies including hydro-dynamic modelling relating to the 64 000 tonnes of toxic effluent the mill will pump into Bass Strait each day.
