We are currently developing a climate change policy. At our recent May General Meeting, Environment Tasmania member group Climate Action Hobart's 'Ten Steps to a Safe Climate' was adopted as a policy platform to build from.

The Ten Steps presents ten actions that government can immediately implement to drive Tasmania’s transition to a sustainable low-carbon future.

An overview of Climate Action Hobart's 10 Steps

1. Set emissions reductions targets: 60 percent by 2020, 100 percent by 2050.

2. Fully account for forest carbon stores and emissions from forest management, protect existing forest carbon stores.

3. Reduce total energy use by 20 per cent by 2020.

4. 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2020.

5. Binding planning laws for sustainable cities and regions.

6. Top priority to public and low-carbon commuter transport.

7. Help workers, businesses, communities shift to a low-carbon future.

8. Promote local food production, sustainable consumption, healthy lifestyles.

9. Eliminate waste and re-use recovered resources.

10. Promote climate justice and climate education.
